How Brewery Works/ brief introduction
There are four main ingredients to brew beer.
Barley is the seed of grain that looks a lot like wheat. Before it can be used it must be malted, (which is the controlled germination of cereals, followed by the termination of this process with the use of heating and further heat to kiln, (dry) the grain to produce the required colour and flavour.
2. Water, (referred to brewers as liquor).
3. Hops
A flower of the hope vine which contain acids, to give beer it's bitterness, as well as oils that give beer some of it's flavor and aroma, (a fragrance, a type of scent). There are a variety of hops, each of which give it a different taste, aroma and amount of bitterness it is used in.
4. Yeast
It doesn't work just by mixing the ingredients, a series of biochemical reactions must occur to covert a few of these ingredients into another for example, converting barley into fermentable sugars and allowing yeast to multiply and converting these sugars into alcohol.
A brief note on research
By researching what ingredients they use to brew beer, it would give the audience an insight into how it's made so that they know what they consume.

Wye Valley Brewery
There are three favourite ales that are brewed to their best tasting beers:
1. Butty Bach. Is welsh for "little friend", it is burnished gold in colour, brewed from Maris Otter, (winte variety of barley commonly used in the production of malt for the brewing industry), crystal malts, flaked barley, malted wheat and locally grown fuggles, (another variety of hop).
2. HPA. A pale ale, boasts a citrus hop aroma leading to a balanced level of bitterness.
Locally target and styrian golding grown hops. With Maris Otter, pale malt and malted wheat also used.
3. Wye Valley Bitter.
Chestnut coloured ale has been brewed using Maris Otter and Crystal malts togeather with locally grown Target and Goldings hops. It gives peppery, malty taste.
They are complemented by the beers of their Dorothy Goodbody's range.
Dorothy Goodbody is the daughter of a local hop grower. Dorothy is very close to the Wye Valley brewer, Jimmy. Dorothy's guiding and Jimmy's skillful techniques into brewing beer, various beers have been conceived.
You can order a 72 pint cask of Dorothy Goodbody's Golden Ale for parties and events.
Here are a few examples of Dorothy Goodbody's variety of beers:
1. Country Ale
It is made with all natural ingredients, a must for any drinker who cares about the countryside. The strong, full-bodied ruby ale can be enjoyed on it's own or as a partner of the meat dishes, cheeses and even rich steamed puddings.
2. Golden ale
This is made into a result of a crisp and zesty flavoured type of beer that can be served on it's own as it is alongside chicken dishes, salads and pasta.
3. Wholesome Stout
This boasts a roasted coffee notes and plenty of hop flavour. As well as getting a few awards such as the 2008 CAMRA Great British Beer Festival champion bottled beer, it's only the second beer to gain top beer writer Roger Protz's full five star rating.

A brief note on research
This gives me an idea on the various flavours that the Wye Valley brewery produce and that this gives me the intellect on the colour and the typography that is used depending on the ingredient in that particular beer, also gives the audience a little sense into what kind of flavour each beer has. Each flavour, taste or scent is also shown of their own packaging.
Legges of Bromyard
Run by a family business, based in Herefordshire, their food is produced locally through their own family farm and food by many other farms throughout the county. They pride themselves on caring stewardship of animals in their natural environment to produce the best meat in which they are directly in control of most of it they sell.
They sell themselves by stating they have a variety of fresh, tasting and sweet products of foods such as fish, dairy, pastries, deli and including sweeteners such as oils. These are a few samples of the food they sell.

Worcester Resource Exchange
The WRE is a project from 'The Duckworth Worcestershire Trust,' (registered charity dedicated to the conservation, protection and enhancement of the natural and built environments for the people of Worcestershire), are a 'scrapstore' which collects clean, safe and recyclable material from a range of local industries and businesses, diverting it from a landfill. The WRE is nicknamed 'Aladdin's Cave' as it is home to a range of reusable material of low cost which is available to members as a creative resource for projects.
Some materials come and go however, they often have paper, felt, cardboard, shiny film, sticky back plastic, foam, plastic cups, fabrics, tubing etc.
Here are some images that I took when visiting

A brief note on research
I initially thought that when it comes to producing the final working prototype, there was one thing that went constantly through my mind, where was I going to find the material I wanted to use to construct my own packaging?
But when I visited the Worcester Resources Exchange scrap store, I can now get cheap, recyclable material at my disposal and experiment also test out and conclude which I think would be the best material to use when constructing my beer rack design. Next I want to examine other existing packaging products to learn and inspire myself on how I can approach my own packaging concept. After that I will start with some initial sketches detailing my strategy on how the rack will be made, and what features it will have for example, a secondary use.
http://www.wre.uk.com/index.htmHow packaging works
When a consumer goes into a supermarket or store, he or she sees a package that attracts them to buy it. Basically, having an attractive, unique and practical packaging design is key to have to a competitive advantage for manufactures and retailers.
Packaging has a primary goal to attract customer's attention, For this purpose, they can't just simply inform them but also to provoke their feelings and communicate emotions.
An example of packaging
I found two examples of different packaging, one of them is a normal beer package that is designed by a graphic designer named John Hilowitz who is a graphic/website designer and he designed a package for a fictional family brewery, he hasn't mentioned on what he has constructed the material out of but it gives me an idea on how I can approach my own concepts in a similar type of way.

http://hilowitz.net/portfolio/index.html
Other examples
I've found some exisiting beer packages to view but a few, (all are on the link blow), and one I particular like out of all of them is the Thirsty turtle packaging because, it's simple and the packaging itself communicates the brewer's logo to make it stand out on it's own. With the other packages, it's more standard looking, a typical six pack kind of design. Some are designed with the use of colour and patterens, one or two are expressed using typography.
| Designed through the use of colour and pattern . |
| Package designed through the use of typography. |
There are other more creative designs that make the packaging unique in it's own way and has a further use than just an ordinary package. Like these for example.
A brief note on research
Learning the purpose of packaging and examing all varieties got me to learn what key elements are used to produce a good design of packaging, for instance the attractiveness that is conveyed in different ways through type and colour makes the consumer want to grab it. This has given me tips on how I can approach my own design.
Next I want to research the sizes of beer bottles as this will give me an esitmate on the size of what my packaging should be.
I will also introduce myself into what sustainability is, how it is achieved and what is the best practice into the design of sustainability because, this will help learn to understand the best ways on how other professionals approach certain projects involving in reducing carbon footprints.
The dimension in beer and ale bottles.
Before I start with the construction of my packaging, i first wanted to find out the dimensions of the beer/ale bottles as this will give me an idea of what size the packaging needs to be. I found some information the size and why they are made the way they are made.
Essentially, all beer bottles are round in cross section; square, rectangle, or other body shapes are almost unknown. Since beer and ale are carbonated fluids (known as to the bottle making industry as 'pressure ware'), they had to be contained in round, heavy, glass bottles since round type bottles are stronger than other shapes.
These bottles were also inherited of thick glass also because, they had to be able to survive extensive post-bottling handling and they are re-used every time.
Here is a few examples of the type of sizes of various beer bottles.
By examining all the various sizes of beer bottles, I was able to conclude that typical beer bottles such as this one don't exceed up to a height of 30cm. This gave me one answer as to the height that the package should be.
Early Ale, Stout and Porter styles
While I was researching about the dimensions, I though that I look a bit into the history of how beer bottles were made.
This bottle was made in the 19th Century. Heavier ales were increasingly bottled and distributed in the eastern half of the U.S. Problems with spoilage confounded the long term storage and quality retention of beer making it a product that needed consumption fairly quickly after fermentation was complete.

Export style
This general beer bottle is widely used for today for lager beers, but also used by modern "microbreweries" for any style of beer for example, porter, ales, stout, Weiss (wheat beer). The name "export" apparently is derived from an exporting business conducted by the St Louis breweries. Much of the production is shipped - "exported"- to the western states and territories.
"Stubbie" and "Steinie" styles.

Introduction to Sustainability
Working sustaiable can be both complicated and simple. Graphic designers see themselves as trendsetters and leaders. So it is no surprise that many of them are inspired to reevaluate professional practice and improving their environmental footprint.
What is sustainable design
Sustainability can be defined in many ways, perhaps in easier meaning it is as the balanced use of natural, social, and economic capital for the continued health of the planet and future generations.
Designers can discuss and begin to adopt sustainable concepts and practices at a variety of levels depending on what the situation is. Professionals have spent decades immersed in these issues agree on that they have yet to find the perfect way of balancing our economic needs with needs of the planet. Therefore, sustainable practice is more about working toward many small goals than it is about living with absolutes.
Best practices to design sustainability
Creating sustainability pieces should begin at the start of the design process, Eric Benson, assiatant professor of graphic design at the University of Illinios and founder of re-nourish.com states that, "first the designer must determine if the project deserves to exist in a tangible form. To do this, the designer should ask the following questions:
Is this the best method to communicate the message?
What is the impact of making this piece?
How can we lessen the impact if we print the piece?
He then goes on to say that "it's important to openly communicate ideas and decisions with the design team and client. It's is also important to be educated about sustainability and to discuss project outcomes before embarking on anty design concept".
Graphic designer and client work collaboratively with each other to create a solution that follows five principals:
A brief note on research
I have looked at the typical sizes of various beer bottles and have found that none of the above exceeds 30cm, this has helped me to decide on a suitable size for my packaging in terms of height. But I need to get a measurement on the width of the bottle.
Learning about sustainability in depth has got me to study on how it is defines, the objectives of how it is acheived and what prinicapls is followed and agreed by both client and designer.
The next stage would be to look at how inks is being made into a more envirionmentally friendly manner.
Then I can start developing some initial and final concepts detailing what my beer packaging will contain, the uses that it will have, how as a whole it is going to be viewed and what information will go on it.
Inks
From an environmental viewpoint alone, many innovations in ink formulations have altered the printing landscape over the years. New developments include new combinations of what is called agri-based inks with minimal volatile organic compounds, (VOCs) such as, water-based inks, and solid, light-curing ink formulations that dry instantly. Other inks are being made from renewable, bio-derived raw materials or have been formulated to speed up the making process and reduce the flow of waste. Another trade-off is the use of soy -based inks. These and other examples of agri-based inks are made from renewable sources and emit fewer VOCs. Soy crops have been grown and have sustained North American farmers and diminished the dependance of nonrenewable resources, such as petroleum. However advocates or critics for sustainable forestry protection are concerned that the cash crops of palm oil and soy are actually contributing to rain forest deforestation and global climate change. They claim that the rise in soy farms damages the ecosyatems, displaces indigenous peoples, and expose farmers, communities and surronding fragile ecosystems to herbicides and pesticides. This is referring to what Gary Jones, director of environmental health and safety affairs for printing industries of America/Graphic Arts Techinal Foundation has stated, "There's no silver bullet when looking at best practices or when looking at environmental perspective. There are postives and negatives with all technologies." obviously we cant find the best solution to our issues, however there are some who do their best to to achive a small percentage of what needs to be achieved.
Ink, Coatings, Processes
There are different types of pigments and dyes but typically, the first largest ingredient is a solvent which gives it fluidity and helps to determine viscosity, the second is what is called a vehicle which to put it simply gives it it's characteristics, such as gloss, water reseistance etc, it is the main area where formulators can improve an ink's environmental performance. I suppose it's where formulators can reduce the characteristic of an ink.The third largest ingredient in an ink is a colorant. They determine how much strength, transparency and opacity of an ink. Some inks are made from pigments and they can be organic or inorganic compounds. Other ingrediants are additives which are put in inks to further enhance their characterisics. Now minimal amounts of additives are used in ink formulations to reduce the environmental impact and the ingredients mentioned are the only ones that are used and combined to make inks.
Waltmart 7Rs
A business called Walmart has been working towards sustainability and they found that they can make good business out of it from a variety of perspectives, such as less risk, increased profits and increased goodwill and market share. They particular have impacts in the packaging industries because, they have extended to other areas where costs can be decreased while also reducing toxins and impact on the environment by initiating what they call "scorecards" rating systems and they ask suppliers to enter product information into a program to determine their impacts. Walmart's Global supply Chain initiative extends ideas and lessons learned from the scorecards effect. They apply them to all sorts of company's product offerings and operations.
Here suppliers are to consider the seven Rs for the packaging of products sold at Walmart's:
1. Remove packaging: Eliminate unnecessary packaging, extra boxes, or layers.
2. Reduce packaging: "Right size" packages and optimze material strength.
3. Reuse packaging: Use round-trip, recycled, or reusuable pallets and reusuable plastic containers.
4. Renewable packaging: Use materials made of renewable resources; select biodegradable or compostable materials.
5. Recyclable packaging: Use amterials with highest recycled content without comprimising quality.
6. Revenue: Achieve all precedings principals at cost parity or cost savings.
7.Read: Get educated on sustainability and how we can support it.

Initial concepts for beer packaging
This is what I come up with for my packaging design:
1. Package in the shape of a cask
My main influence behind this idea was when I explored the Wye Valley Brewery website, I found that you can order a 72 pint cask of one of their branded products, mainly the Dorothy Goodbody's golden ale. You can order them for parties and events.
The one element that it answers is that it's secondary use which i have illustrated, is to attach some handle which you can easily carry around with you and take your drinks or beverages with you lets say to someone house.
One point that i would emphasise to them is the fact that it's in the shape of a cask which advertises the take away orders that they sell to you on their website.
Another is the material that it would be made out of which could be cardboard and the brewery sells 95% of their beer in a cask as a reusable package.
Thirdly the products that the packaging would sell is two of the award winning beer brands, (which will be positioned where the colour coded crossed out box is illustrated to resemble which of the best ale products the package is selling) for example, one from Dorothy Goodbody's products, such as the wholesome stout or two of the Wye Valley's own brewery lets say the Butty Bach. With the addition of a condiment.
2. Package in the shape of a pub house
My main influence was when I researched the box package by a graphic designer named John Hilowitz, he designed cd packaging for an early band, however the shape gave me the idea of a package in the shape of a pub.
Again the element that it answers is that the material is recyclable made out of cardboard and the use of it being transportable so it has a secondary use.
I would emphasise that the package also looks like a present so it would be useful for female audiences to buy this and give to their husbands.
Secondly, the information that is to go with the packaging would tell you about each brand of beer and why it is at good quality and this would give the audience some temptation into buying it.
Thirdly, it is user friendly such as the shape and easy to open as it will have rope attached to it which you can untie and open the package.
3. Package in the shape of a gift.
My main influence for this idea, was when I explored the Legges Butchers and Deli website. They sell their food products and they wrap it as a present for you to give to someone in a special occasion. I illustrated the package as a present.
Few elements of the brief that it answers, is it is appealing for gifting and it would combine Wye Valley Brewery and Legges design cues by including both of their logos, but the Wye Valley Brewery being on the higher heirachy by being positioned on the outside of the package on top, to communicate that the products is from that brand with the addition of a condiment that is produced by Legges.
I emphasise that the shape of the packaging would attract the audience, in this case female audiences who love buying gifts or presents for their loved ones.
Secondly, it is easily transportable as in the rope handle that is attached on top is used for carrying around. Also you can use the packaging to store any other goods to take with you so it has a secondary use.
Thirdly, I would mention on the package that it is celebrating their 25th anniversary and therefore to celebrate, the package would sell their best products which is very ideal when creating temptation in the audiences mind as to why they should buy it.
4. Package in the shape of a beer tap in a typical pub
My main influence was remembering the beer taps in the pub, that the bar tender uses to get beer into the glass. I illustrated them on top of the package as if it was to ready to be served.
The one element of the brief that it answers, is that it reflects on the quality and the popularity of the key ingredient as the taps illustrated resembles that products is chosen by the customer ready to be served to them.
One point that i emphasise on is how firm the package wraps the products, therefore it reduces less damage to the bottles.
One point that i emphasise on is how firm the package wraps the products, therefore it reduces less damage to the bottles.
Secondly, The material is recyclable as it would be constructed out of corrugated cardboard and the material is not so easy to break.
Thirdly, it helps negate the wasteful aspects of environmental credentials as in using less print by the package only being printed one side.
Thirdly, it helps negate the wasteful aspects of environmental credentials as in using less print by the package only being printed one side.
The best idea to go for
Personally, my choice would be to go for the landscaped present shaped packaging, (concept 3) because the shape is appealing for gifting therefore it would attract more female users into buying it for their loved ones.
Concept 1 taking further
I decided to take my first concept further and hand rendered the package in more detail. To put in a nutshell, the interior and exterior have holders to hold the products but I plan to place the wye valley ale products and the condiment on the exterior and place other beverages inside to use a secondary purpose. I illustrated the holders that have little grips that can be attached to the package which fits into little holes around the package without the use of glue. It also has a lid to open and close the interior.

I illustrated the holders that have little grips that can be attached to the package which fits into little holes around the package without the use of glue. It also has a lid to open and close the interior.
Mock up package
My package isn't cleanly perfected but the whole general idea is that as I explained before on the illustration, (above), I included some holders both interior and exterior to hold the primary products in the interior, (Wye valley bottles and condiment), the exterior having other secondary products, mostly beverages. I constructed the package into the shape of a cube and not into a cilinder shape that is supposed to resemble a cask, however the only material I managed to get at this point was a thick double layer of corrugated cardboard not the thin one which is ideal for bending, however this had to suffice for now. It was hard to bend and with the concern in mind that I risk the material breaking from bending it too much which I did, also the problem figuring out the net design for the package into a cask shape, I thought that I construct my package into a cube for now. I may experiment with different material as there are probably more effiecient materials to make the package. I included another use where it can carry other beverages which is what the grips are for on the outside and the rope attached to carry around, therefore easier to transport products.
I haven't given up on the idea of designing a cask shape package but with a little more time I can figure out the right net design to construct it from and the package is simple enough in terms of fitting each part together as well.I haven't thought what typeface and color I would use yet but I plan to make the packaging aiming towards the female audience so that this is can be bought as a gift.
Adjustments to the cask package
My original idea was suggested that it needed a proper secondary use because, just including a handle and holding other beverages is not a strong enough concept as it needed to be something that can be used for a completely different purpose. Also the package constructed in this way made it look complicated so I needed to simplify it more.
I have made some changes to the package while keeping to the same shape and size. I'm considering transforming it into a jigsaw puzzle as well as a package for beer, this way it would keep the audience entertained. With that being said, the package is still designed as a gift therefore, still targeting the female audience to give to their husbands, but at the same time, targeted for children for them to play with the jigsaw. Or another consideration would be to target this package at the adult audience only in which the package could be used as a chess game.
The changes I have made to the package itself are that, I have taken the holders from the exterior which was originally meant to hold other beverages but not any more, as it only has the holders to hold the main target products inside. I have included a window that is the the shape of the logo for the consumer to view the products becuase, this would give a stronger influence on the business itself.
The main body of the package will be gripped by the grips that are attaching each part of the package because, I plan to make it easier for the audience to dissemble the package in which the chess board or jigsaw puzzle is inside, and positioned on parts of the net design of the package.
I have hand rendered the package once more to finalise its contents. On the front it will have the brewery's logo and information on the flavour of each beer and condiment, on the back it will have part of the logo which will be enlarged and used as a window to look into the package to view the products, on the base there will be a jigsaw puzzle with an image of the beer bottle and the logo as a secondary use which will keep the audience occupied, also the handle is still part of the package in which it makes things easier to carry around and the sides of the package will have information stating:
- How the beer is brewed or ingredients.
- About the products itself for example, what awards they have won.
- What each type of beer is good with each type of food or condiment.
- What the business itself pride themselves on.
Final Prototype
My prototype has evolved from the last one I constructed because, I manage to solve the problem of assembling it into it's rightful shape by illustrating each part of the package to be unconnected since last time when I illustrated the net design for the previous prototype and assembled it, it was unable to bend into it's proper shape when lifting parts to it's upright position as the main body part were drawn on in one big circular shape.
This time since the parts that are stood upright are unconnected and I used rope to tie each side of the package together however, when assembling it together, it was too fiddly to tie each side of the package and it was also time consuming so it was suggested, that I wrap some rope around the package and weave in and out and tie it to one spot which will be much faster to assemble and dissemble.
It includes the content that to be positioned around each side of the package, such as:
1. What the business is about, this give the audience an idea on how they brew the beers that they do.
2. The awards of the product that would attract the audience's attention
3. What ingredients the product has and what condiment or food it goes with.
4. Some patterns to make the package stand out and appealing to the female audience as this package will be aimed at the older female audience for example, wives that buy this package as a present to give to their husbands.
5. One side of the package has an opening in the shape of the wye valley logo that acts as a window that allows you to look inside to view the products.
6. For it's second usage is that on the base there is a jigsaw puzzle.
A brief note on research

A brief note on research
I took the time to study about inks because, I learned how they are trying to be sustained by the formulations of the ingredients that are being used, which is ideal when it's to be printed onto a package and other print based media that is supposed to communicate to the audience on how recycable it is. It was the best way to learn how they are being made, as this is part of my conceptual research. I found additional research about a business called Walmart who deal with sustainable products and they follow the principals of what makes a good sustainable package. This is ideal as now I know how they approach in their concepts to make recyclable packaging for products.
I think I manged to find a solution to my newst concept for my own package and adjusted it from my initial thinking because, I needed to include a better re-use for it, needed to rethink on the simplicity of the package and came up in a way to assemble and dissemble very quickly so that it's easier for the audience to understand how to use it.
