Task 02 Sustainable mulit-use packaging

1 comment:

  1. Here's a video that promotes a company called bemis who contribute to making a more stabled environment by designing sustainable packaging that is recycled and re-used.

The points that I believe this video relates to according to the Eco Designer's Manifesto

    1. Design to minimise the ecological footprint of the product/material/service product.

Committed to reducing their impact on the planet by helping people using less packaging by developing new sustainable packaging material, (51sec – 1:08min).

    2. Design to maximise a product/material/service product's benefits to communities.

They take social considerations in their sustainable approach for example, ensuring packaging safety, protecting employee and environmental safety but that's their big picture view, (1:46-2:03min).

    3. Design to create more sustainable products/materials/service products for a more sustainable future.

Their examples of a couple of innovated packaging products include a material known as Eco Tite Shrink Bags that is used up to 25% less packaging, they provide superior barrier, puncture and abrasion resistance to protect meats and cheese.
Cheese films that they design uses less transportations and warehouse costs with a new film roll that is 18% more film per roll, (4:58-6:00min).

    4. Designed to harness solar income (sun, wind, water or sea power) rather than using non-renewable energy such as fossil fuels.

They incorporate renewable energy in their power mix by purchasing wind and biomass.

    5. Design to enable the separation of components of the product/ material or service products at their end of life in order to encourage recycling or re-use of materials and/or components.

They recycle as much implant material trim as possible. They work to reduce manufacturing wastes by finding new markets for scrapping materials.

    6. Design to encourage modularity in design to permit sequential purchases, as needs require and funds permit, to facilitate repair/re-use and to improve functionality.

They partner with stakeholders, from customers, to communities and non-profit organisations. They have an ongoing partnership with Plantic who is a leading developer of biodegradable packaging material made from natural material such as corn. They allow Bemis to use palntics materials and technology, (9:00- 9:30min).
